How to work on your self-esteem after experiencing a traumatic event?

If you are someone who has been through a traumatic experience, your entire view on life has probably changed. And while many people think that they are the only ones, you are not - we are all struggling with low self-esteem, or at least we have experienced such a period in our lives.

When you go through such a traumatic event that is the loss of a child, your self-esteem will rapidly drop in the guilt phase

This happens because you feel like you have done something wrong for such a tragic event to happen. You will also feel ashamed and try to stay away from other parents, believing that you have failed in your mission.

In this phase, your mental health usually gets worse.

If you are struggling with low self-esteem now, know that you are not alone. Here is what you can do about it:

1. Understand that it is not your fault. I know that it is hard to understand for now, but it truly isn't your fault. Life is sometimes very unfair, but you should remind yourself that there isn't anything you can do to stop the tragedy. If, in any case, you were somehow responsible for your child's death, think about professional therapy which will help you to accept what now cannot be changed and continue with your life.

2. You cannot change what happened - here is what to do with overthinking and repeatable thoughts. You should deal with overthinking and negative thoughts as well. I have already written an article on this topic - you can read more about it here.

3. Know your worth and set healthy limits and boundaries with people from your environment. If you are feeling guilty for the tragedy and if your self-esteem has rapidly dropped, you have a high chance of becoming a people pleaser as well. Here is what to know about it - learn how to set healthy boundaries with others and take care of your mental health.

4. ''Disappear'' for a while. Working on yourself and your personal development is a must after experiencing a trauma. At least, you can disappear from the online world and work on yourself this way.

5. Join a healthy and supportive community. Have no one to talk to? Know that you can always join our forum where are people exactly like you and those who are dealing with the same problems and feelings.

Take care!
